八勁 (Ba Jin)
The Eight Energies (Bā Jìn, 八劲) of Taijiquan are the core expressions of internal power:
Peng (ward off), expansive and uplifting;
Lü (roll back), yielding and redirecting;
Ji (press), concentrated forward power;
An (push), sinking and rebounding;
Cai (pluck), sudden pulling down;
Lie (split), spiraling, tearing force;
Zhou (elbow), close-range striking;
Kao (shoulder), full-body bumping.
Together, they embody Taijiquan’s balance of softness and strength, defense and attack.
